One of the advantages of the advance in technology is its easy availability in small and less expensive sizes. All the major companies have come up with cheaper, more affordable options for laptops. With the introduction of high speed processors, LED technology, small screens and plastic, laptops have become more accessible. This highly benefits students, in school or college and people who are just starting off work. In fact, to make things more interesting, these low-price laptops come in more color options and look cuter, especially the micro mini notebooks, while including most of the features of a regular laptop. Generally, what is missing is the CD-ROM drive and DVD burner, making it a little difficult to watch or edit movies.
First, the need for the laptop should be determined. Whether it is simple word processing or a full-fledged studio is required. Depending on the requirement, one can go for low price laptops. These days, laptops range anything from $100 to $400 as compared to a high end laptop for $2000.
If an internet connection is all you need, for chatting with friends or doing research, you don’t really need a high end machine. The standard features are access to wireless network, dual core processor, a 2GB to 4GB RAM, a screen ranging from 13 inch, 14 and 15 inch onwards. The storage capacity is up to 320 GB hard disk on the internal hard drive. Depending it has 3 cell or 6 cell batteries, the battery life ranges from 3 hours to a good 7-8 hours. Most of them now have at least two USB ports, head phone and microphone jacks, surround sound system, a web-cam, a media card reader, in-built camera and the processing speed is minimum 2.3 GHz.
These processors and hardware will be able to perform well for simple tasks like surfing the web, light photo editing, word processing in Word, Excel and even give Powerpoint presentations, while offering enough storage for pictures and allow to watch movies from the internet or a memory drive.
What is compromised depends on the requirement. You can reduce cost with lower, though upgradable RAM, low resolution, or compromise on the warranty if it is more that 15% of the total cost of the computer. Another option is to buy second hand laptops or bid for one.
